Collection day has a habit of arriving faster than you expect. One moment you are on the waiting list, the next you are counting down the days. The secret to a smooth, joyful first day — for you and for your kitten — is being completely prepared before they arrive. A kitten walking into a calm, ready home settles faster, eats better, and relaxes sooner. This is everything you need — nothing more, nothing less.
The non-negotiables — have these ready before collection day
Food and water bowls
Ceramic or stainless steel only — they are easier to keep clean and less likely to harbour bacteria than plastic. Two separate bowls: one for wet food, one for dry. Position water away from food — cats are instinctively reluctant to drink near their food.
The right food
We will tell you exactly what your kitten has been eating so you can have the same ready at home. Consistency in the first few weeks avoids digestive upset. See our kitten information page for more detail on feeding.
Litter tray and litter
Have at least one tray set up and ready. Your kitten is used to Greenwood's Tofu Litter or Cat's Best Original — stick with one of these initially. Position in a quiet, accessible spot away from food and water.
Carrier
Sturdy, well-ventilated and large enough to grow into. Put a familiar-smelling item inside a few days before collection so it already feels like a safe space.
Bed and safe space
Set this up before you leave to collect them. When you arrive home, place the carrier in this space, open the door and let them explore at their own pace. The scent blanket from your kitten pack goes straight into the bed — it is the most important settling tool you have.
Scratch post or cat tree — non-negotiable
All our kittens leave scratch post trained. If there is nothing appropriate waiting for them, they will find something of their own choosing. Have a tall, solid post ready on day one.
Toys
Siamese are intelligent, curious, high-energy cats. Wand toys, crinkle balls, puzzle feeders — plan for at least two dedicated play sessions a day, especially in the first weeks.
The things that genuinely make life better
Beyond the basics, there are a handful of products we use at The House of Siamese every single day and would not be without. These are things we have tested, trust and genuinely believe make a meaningful difference.
A smart self-cleaning litter tray
Once you have one, you will wonder how you ever managed without it. Self-cleans after every use, monitors usage patterns for early health indicators, keeps the tray fresh at all times.
A cat water fountain
Cats have a naturally low thirst drive and often do not drink enough from a static bowl. A fountain encourages significantly better hydration — essential for long-term kidney health. One of the most impactful things you can buy.
A good cat tree
Non-negotiable for a Siamese. They need height, they need to climb, and without a dedicated tree your furniture becomes their chosen alternative. All our kittens leave scratch post trained — having one ready makes the transition so much smoother.
A GPS tracker
If you ever plan to allow outdoor access, this is something we feel strongly about. Siamese are confident, curious cats — and once they discover the outside world, they explore further than you would ever expect.
Fresh cat food
Fresh food makes a genuine difference to how kittens settle and thrive. KatKin is made from 100% human-grade meat, nutritionist-approved and delivered fresh to your door — and it is what we feed our own girls here at The House of Siamese. We recommend it because we believe in it
Pet insurance — please sort this before collection day
Vet fees can be significant, and Siamese cats — like all pedigree breeds — can be prone to certain breed-specific conditions. Having insurance in place from day one means you never find yourself making health decisions based on cost rather than what is right for your cat.
Please do not leave this until after collection day. Insurance cannot be backdated, and the first year of a kitten's life is statistically when claims are most common. Sort it before you collect them — it takes minutes and gives you complete peace of mind from the moment they walk through the door.
Our Amazon Storefront — everything in one place
We have pulled together everything we personally use and recommend into one easy place — our Amazon Storefront. Water fountains, smart litter trays, dental supplements, toys, scratch posts and more. Every product on there is something we have tested, trust and use ourselves.
If you want a simple, no-fuss way to tick off your kitten essentials list in one go — this is the place to start.
